Dr Mahesh Jayaram is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne. He is the Coordinator for the face to face and Online Masters of Psychiatry courses at the University of Melbourne and has been instrumental in the development of this exciting course. On completion of his training in India, he moved to the UK in 2001 and completed the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He then worked as a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS for 7 years. He became editor of Cochrane Schizophrenia Group (2009) and has taught, authored and edited numerous Cochrane systematic reviews.

His other research interests include evaluating novel interventions (e.g. cannabidiol) for treating schizophrenia, improving psychiatric attendances in outpatient clinics, use of mobile technology to outreach mental health care in rural communities, development of guidelines for treatment of acquired brain injury and more recently the use of social media to disseminate evidence related to health care. He has just completed the world’s first randomised controlled trial on Twitter and Weibo.  His work comparing risperidone vs olanzapine was in the top most most downloaded paper in 2006, as rated by Medscape. He also has an interest in service development and has conducted real world clinical trials to improve attendance rates in out patient clinics. He has worked in numerous developing countries including India and Zambia and helped with setting up and supporting mental health infrastructure and teaching.

In addition to his research work, he works in a busy general adult community team as a psychiatrist and is involved in the teaching of medical students. He has obtained nearly $1.5 million in research funding so far and continues to collaborate with clinicians and academics across Australia and internationally.
